The Life of Rooster

Everybody in Coledale knows Rooster.

A coal miner, surf lifesaver, storyteller and familiar face at the Coledale RSL, Noel Brackenreg has spent more than 80 years living in this little coastal community.

But behind the jokes, the friendships and that familiar face is a story few people know.

At just 15, Rooster lost both his parents within five months. His family was separated, his dreams of becoming an architect disappeared, and he was left to find his own way in the world.

What followed was a lifetime of hard work, love, adventure and friendship. Thirty-five years working underground in the coal mines. More than six decades of marriage. A lifetime spent bringing people together.

Now 91, Rooster reflects on the people he’s loved, the friends he’s outlived, the extraordinary changes he’s witnessed and the memories that have never left him. And through it all, one simple wish remains.

“I just hope that people like me. That’s very important to me.”

This is a deeply human story about loss, resilience, belonging and the extraordinary significance of an ordinary life.

This is Rooster’s life story on Playback.

Recorded at Coledale RSL, 22 October 2026.
